It is hard to disagree that several core American values are an exceptionally significant element of people’s lives and wellness. According to researchers, minority rights “are the normal individual rights as applied to members of racial, ethnic, class, religious, linguistic or sexual minorities; and also, the collective rights accorded to minority groups” (“Minority rights,” 2020). Therefore, this value is crucial, and the fact that minorities are sometimes deprived of their fundamental rights is an issue that has to be eliminated.
Typically, ordinary people decide whether minority rights are respected by the government and other members of society. Since 2001, Gallup’s trend is to conduct social surveys and find out how satisfied people are with the treatment of African-Americans, immigrants, Hispanics, and other minorities in the states (Brenan, 2020). In 2020, “35% of U.S. adults overall are satisfied with the treatment of Black people, marking a nine-point decline since the previous reading in 2018” (Brenan, 2020, para. 1). Therefore, it is possible to suggest that minority rights are respected less, and members of these groups face injustice and worse treatment compared to white citizens.
There is a specific reason for this significant decline in people’s perceptions of African-Americans’ treatment. Brenan (2020) believes that it was George Floyd’s death that sparked nationwide protests against the violation of minority rights, namely racial injustice. Citizens’ empathy toward and understanding of Black adults, as well as immigrants, Hispanics, and Asians in the U.S., have heightened. To avoid people’s dissatisfaction and disappointment, it is essential to respect the rights of all humans, regardless of race, gender, religion, background, and social status. In this case, it is easier to achieve a bright future where everyone is mindful, respectful, kind, and careful.
