Family groups are “kinship ties or social bonds based on ancestry, marriage or adoption” (Nelson Community and Family Studies, 2014). In relation to myself, my family is very close and has formed ties that are almost indestructible because not only are they close by blood, but they are also close by friendly ties. Excluding me, I live in a household of five people which includes both of my parents, my younger brother, and my two younger sisters. Our time is mostly spent with each other whether it be through visiting each other, functions, celebrations, or through mobile communication (e.g, social media, calls, messages). Although, on rare occasions where there would be a few disagreements on certain topics, it is constructively solved and respected within our family as we are aware of our individuality and values.
Work groups are members who have voluntarily been associated with each other, cooperating with one another in order to run the business efficiently. As for my job, I work in a cafe, floating in different areas including being a waitress, and barista and helping out in the kitchen. My work team consists of my manager, chief, and six other workers who have their own responsibilities and jobs within the cafe. Each one of us cooperatively works together to display our work ethic and execute our business goals.
The values, principles, and actions that are made by myself and members of my family all cooperate into meeting both individual and community needs. In reference to my family, positively deliver the individual and physiological needs of belonging, love, safety, and security. The sense of belonging and love is vividly displayed within my family as we all appreciate and know our worth. Safety and security are also immensely shown simply through the security systems within our homes, businesses, phones, and accounts, ensuring all our private information is secure. The private healthcare my parents have under all our names also supplies insurance and security in regard to our health, whether it be medical or dental. Their contribution to the needs of our community mainly aligns with their place and purpose of work. These needs are executed through the labor work of my mother as she is a hairdresser, providing the aesthetic needs to the community, and the labor work of my brother as he is a plumber, providing the community with safety and physiological needs. Through my dad’s platform his restaurant, he is able to use that to give back to the community by giving excess meals and stock/food items from his restaurant to the less fortunate fulfilling their physiological needs.
Working in a cafe, my work group caters to the wants and needs of both my individual self and the community. Referring to Maslow’s Hierarchy, all social, esteem, cognitive and physiological needs are met, positively impacting my individuality and the community I live in through my work group and environment. Social needs can be fulfilled through my work as we develop relationships with members of the community and workgroup. Thus, by developing our social beings, myself and others strengthen our self-esteem as we build confidence and recognition. During work, we are continuously expanding our knowledge satisfying my cognitive needs. By understanding certain situations such as conflict and errors between the workgroup and customer, we are both able to enhance our individual and community’s cognition as they understand and are aware. Our main focus at work is to serve the community caringly, therefore, by supplying the community with needs such as food and water whilst also creating a sufficient income for ourselves, we are heightening access to everyone’s physiological needs.
Within my family, many values and morals are set out, inherited, and practiced since birth. The purpose of my family is to nurture and maintain everyone’s well-being, health, and safety. General goals established include providing financial resources, a home in which we all take pride, generating an adequate income, and being supportive of every decision and outcome made. My family works collectively as a group to demonstrate these goals throughout our everyday activities, whether it be at work, school, home, or in public. Short-term goals within my family are goals that are achieved on a daily basis. These include keeping our home tidy, keeping all housework completed, and ensuring the safety and well-being of all members of my family. Medium-term goals are often achieved between a fortnight to a month, these goals can include my siblings and me getting better grades, consistent work ethic, and making time to spend with one another and extended family members. Long-term goals within my family are often achieved between a year and a decade. Long-term goals include buying individual or family cars, living or moving into a home where we all feel secure and safe, ensuring every family member is living their happiest version of themselves and potentially graduating from school, degrees, and starting another family.
Whilst at work, my work team and I play our parts to reach our individual and overall goals through our station. The most prominent goal of a business is to make a profit and to maintain or increase its success rate. In order to achieve these overall goals, short, medium, and long-term goals are put in place where the acronym ‘SMART’ is used making them smart, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bounded. Goal setting is important within the workplace because it supports the satisfaction of both the wants and needs of the business and community. Short-term goals are typically goals that are achievable in one working day, this can include reaching a certain daily budget or reaching optimum productivity. Medium-term goals include goals that can be achieved weekly or monthly, such as an increase in customer satisfaction and activity. These measures are seen through reports and statements that display the revenue made towards the business and customer reviews. Long-term goals are referred to objectives that can take up to a year. Within a business like a cafe, brand recognition, reputation, and media following is the ultimate long-term goal as many success rates come from that.
In relation to my family, we all play different roles with different responsibilities because they are linked to the level of authority and status within the family. As for my dad, his role plays as the main provider for the family in terms of income, resources, and security, whereas my mum has worked less in the last year, leaving her to nurture the family and household more. As for myself, being the eldest sibling, I’m expected to care for and lead by example for my younger siblings. My younger brother works to provide for himself whilst also being a protective and supportive figure to both my parents and siblings. My two younger sisters are in the care of my parents and me as they are still dependent on certain tasks. They provide extra affection, happiness, and love to the family, making our bonds stronger.
