The American revolution was a war that will go down in history, as America demanded its independence from its parent nation, Britain. War is considered revolutionary when it introduces new ideas or topics that are advanced from its current state. This war brought about new ideas of nationality, democracy, and radical ideas of freedom that would lead to our lifestyle today. This war not only demanded independence as many others had before but introduced new ideas. The American revolution was truly revolutionary because it introduced a new mindset.
Many will argue that this war was not revolutionary because it did not lead to a dramatic change in social structure. This argument is supported by evidence showing that even though there was no longer royalty, social inequalities and institutions remained in place. This argues the revolution supported freedom and equality, not for the minorities who need it, but only for the already free white man. Though these claims are true, the war was revolutionary not because of the change it caused, but the seed that was planted in the colonist’s minds. These radical thoughts of freedom and equality started with first the white male and evolved to women, blacks, Native Americans, minorities, and everyone. The war also created not a new social structure, but a completely new government. This proves that though these statements are true they don´t fully support a claim that the war was not revolutionary.
24,000 men dies, and as a result, a new government was birthed in, 1789. Democracy was already in the colonist’s minds, before the Treaty of Paris in, 1783. After the war was won and independence was claimed the colonists wondered how they would keep the structure. The new states were completely self-governed and wanted to change the regime. They began to try a democratic process of government. They believed everyone should have a say resulting in a direct democracy. This was considered an enlightenment idea. The thought of putting the power of society into its own people’s hands was revolutionary. Other nations including, France, continued to model their own revolutions after this to demand freedom; French Revolution. The revolution produced a government that had never been seen before that reflects much of what we see in our government present day. The ideas of elections and voting derived from this revolutionary war.
‘All men are created equal’ -Thomas Jefferson, Declaration of Independence. A revolutionary idea was written into the American Declaration of Independence. Though, at the time this did not represent females and minorities the idea of all men were equal with no higher classes than of monarchy was new for its time. This idea planted a seed that continued to evolve. People realized that if all men were equal that this includes all races and eventually genders. The revolution itself is said to be birthed enlightenment thinking. The Declaration of Independence drafted by, Thomas Jefferson is much modeled after the thoughts of John Locke. These ideas believed you are given rights given just for being a live human being. Including, life liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. A number of groups have struggled to continue to reinstate their rights guaranteed by the Constitution in the centuries since the United States was established. Again, though these rights were applied biasedly at first it led to further thinking.
Some may say it was like any other rebellion, but what made it so revolutionary was that it didn’t involve a regime change, but the creation of an entirely new nation and form of government. America demanded its independence from its parent nation, Britain, and caused a complete upheaval in reforming the nation. Many will argue that this war was not revolutionary because it did not lead to a dramatic change in social structure. The American revolution was revolutionary because it introduced a new mindset and reform of government. Social change takes much time, but the revolution did jumpstart this. This war brought about truly revolutionary ideas of nationality, democracy, and freedom that would lead to our lifestyle today.
