This midterm exam will be used to evaluate your competence in comprehending, analyzing, and connecting course materials that we covered during the first half of our class. In displaying such competence, you are expected to be precise, logical, and comprehensive in your answers. You also need to write with clarity, appropriate organization, and adequate sentence-level proficiency. Your grade will be based on how well you perform in attaining these rubrics.
The first part of the midterm is “Definition of Terms” and the second will consist of two “short answer” questions.
For the “Definition of Terms” section, you will define each item in one sentence (one point), and then, also for each, state a one-sentence significance (for example, why did we talk about the term?; what is the larger context of the term?; how is the term connected with other terms?) (one point). The total points you’ll earn for this section of the midterm is 30 points.
Each short answer essay will require you to write accurately and concisely. There is no minimum nor maximum amount that you will need to write, just be sure to answer the questions to the best of your availability. Each short answer question will be worth 20 points, totaling 40 points. Be sure to note which question you are answering. Also please be sure to pay attention to the points assigned to different parts of the question. If there are more points assigned, be prepared to write more. Each essay should be typed on a word-processing document that you must upload into Canvas (.pdf or .docx) ; double-spaced, 12-point font size, and in black ink.
Prior to submission, make sure to title your document with the following format “ETH ST 1 – (Section number) – Midterm” at the top of every page you submit. No need for a citation page, since you will not be asked to cite any author that we did not read in class. But when you mention within your essay an author that we read or referred to in class, make sure you spell their name correctly.
Submit these by MONDAY OCTOBER 21ST AT 11:59pm. Late submissions will incur an automatic 5 point deduction for every day that it is late.
Between now and 11:59 pm on Monday, October 21st, you are not allowed to consult with each other or with anybody, you are not allowed to write the same sentences with anyone who is taking the exam, and you are not allowed to plagiarize anybody or lift words and sentences from any site or source. Please abide by our rules of academic honesty and integrity in truthful and responsible ways. Use of AI (i.e. ChatGPT) to compose your exam answers will result in an automatic 0 for the midterm.
The total points for the terms will be 30 points and the two essays will be 40 points. The total points for the entire midterm exam will be 70 points. You are required to do all parts of the exam; any part that is not submitted will result in a non-passing grade for the entire exam. As with our previous assignments, do not submit answers at the last minute!
Make sure you answer the terms and essay questions directly and sequentially.

In this class we have explored various forms of citizenship/membership to the United States. In addition, we have explored how these types of citizenship/membership are tied to social hierarchy.
