Throughout the course of the semester you will complete 5 discussion boards. Each week that a discussion board is due you will be responsible for completing 2 posts (10 posts total). For post 1: You will critically assess two things that stood out to you while reading that week’s chapter. For post 2: After waiting for at least 2 people to make a post 1, you will identify gaps or missing areas of information from the textbook chapter that week that the rest of your discussion group did not address. If Post 1 deadlines have passed & no one has posted, you can make your post 2. The 2-person guideline is meant to keep people from posting too early so that everyone has a chance to provide information to the DB. You will NOT reply to another student, but rather will create another thread under the forum for that week. I want to see depth and critical thought, rather than just listing points of information. You will do this by adding an additional two new points of view/information, following the same format as the first post. This means that you MUST say something that you/someone else did not already say in the post (this requires that you read through what others have already said). Waiting until the last minute to post may put you at risk of not being able to provide a unique perspective as well as being at risk of losing points for content. For example, if someone already discussed the ripeness of apples in one of their posts, then you fail to thoroughly read the discussion board & you also decide to write about the same perspective of apples then you would lose points for not adding an additional NEW point of view. Within each post, please talk about concept one in its own paragraph, and then create a space below it & start a new paragraph for your second concept. So that Both concepts can be easily distinguished. Please remember to be considerate in your comments. Civil debate is applauded; however, vulgar, rude, derogatory remarks, are not tolerated and will result in loss of points & potential additional consequences. Creating your post. The following steps will take place to create the post on your group discussion board: You will create a NEW thread (also called Response) per post UNDER that week’s forum (a.k.a discussion topic) within your enrolled group. For each post you will label it in the following format: Last name, 1st initial-group#, discussion board (DB)#, post# (Duncan, J, group1, DB1, post2) at the begining of the response. DO NOT use direct quotes for any portion of your discussion boards. Doing so will result in a 0 per post. This is important, as you need to put your thoughts into your own words. Higher level thinking means that you take what you have read and synthesize it in a new way. Only use the 3rd edition (U.S.) as this will result in .5 reduction in points per post. APA Guidelines for discussions Example of how I want you to cite your source (while this example includes the correct book & year it is not an example of depth of response. During school, kids begin to develop stronger gender identities, with boys typically identifying with masculine and girls identifying with feminine traits (Arnett & Jensen, 2019, p. 45). According to Arnett and Jensen (2019) boys experience more strict gender norms, whereas girls are given more freedom to experiment with various gender expressions (p. 50). This is an example of how I want you to cite your source for the online book version which has no page numbers (you will cite the learning objective number and paragraph number). During elementary school, children begin to develop stronger gender identities, with boys typically identifying with masculine and girls identifying with feminine traits (Arnett & Jensen, 2019, ch. 2, lo. 3.4, para. 4). According to Arnett and Jensen (2019) Boys tend to experience more strict gender norms, whereas girls are given more freedom to experiment with various gender expressions (ch. 2, lo. 4.6, para. 5). Count the # of paragraphs starting after the learning objective (not from beginning of the chapter). Examples for losing points for APA: using pg. instead of p. or no space between p. & the page number. Sometimes you’ll find that Arnett & Jensen used information from another source in the class book. For the purposes of discussion boards in this class, do NOT have to cite the other source. Instead discuss whatever evidence from the book you believe is relevant and cite it as (Arnett & Jensen, 2019, ….). You are NOT required to have a reference list, and if you do it will also be included for APA grading & the reference list will not count towards your total word count requirement.
