Peer Theme Comment

One theme from “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time” is bravery, facing your fears in order to feel safe.

Christopher explores the world more through visual channels, which helps him cope with fear and the unknown. Christopher in his reflection on time and knowledge notes that only a fracture of what has happened or will happen in the future is available to a person (Haddon 194). Time for him is a mysterious and incomprehensible thing, the riddle of which no one has yet solved. Christopher notes that being lost in time is worse than being lost in the desert since time cannot be seen (Haddon 195). This aspect identifies that the character has a fear not only of the unknown but also of what has no visual image and cannot be perceived by sight.

That is why Christopher builds a map of space and time that helps him face his fear. He says, “And this is why I like timetables because they make sure you don’t get lost in time” (Haddon 195). Thus, Christopher is afraid of time as a disembodied phenomenon. However, to overcome his fear, he uses visual images to help him grasp such complex concepts. Christopher is afraid of time but tries to be brave and face it by creating a map of it for understanding. It is important for him to visualize his fear of the unknown and overcome it for a more comfortable perception of the world around him. This strategy helps Christopher feel safer and more secure in his judgments.
