Advance directive form Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment (MOST) is one of the most common forms related to end of life care programs. This form lists the main options for doctors to intervene in a critically ill patient. In my opinion, this form describes various options for treating patients in sufficient detail. It allows both to maintain a person’s life until natural death, and to prevent it by all means. It also considers particular significant ways of intervention, such as, for example, intubation or dialysis. Thanks to this, the people responsible for patients’ life can develop the most competent approach to their treatment. In addition, if necessary, this allows accelerating the healing process, since doctors will not need to contact the responsible person for permits in critical situations.
In my opinion, advance directives have various pros and cons. On the one hand, they allow people to take care of patients who are incapable of it themselves. Often, relatives wish each other the best; therefore, they can choose the most suitable attitude to each other. However, on the other hand, their decisions are not always rational. Because of them, many people spend many years of their lives in a coma or a vegetative state. Their life is saved, but they are no longer the people they were before. At the same time, vast amounts of money should be spent on maintaining their lives. Therefore, signing advance directives is a responsible and essential step. Its points must be discussed with the doctor, and people should not rush to make a decision. Only after considering the possible outcomes of any care can they understand what would be beneficial for a patient.
