Goals
The goals I have established for this week were connected to the processes of learning and integrating gathered knowledge into practice. The first goal was to learn more about the roles of strategic planning in the nurses’ work. The second goal was to find more information about the technological advancements in nursing and understand how to make appropriate decisions and budget for this innovative sphere. Finally, the third goal was to look into the structure of shared governance and its implementation in the workplace.
These goals were all connected to my ability to grasp different concepts and comprehend new information quickly. I believe that I was able to achieve all established goals for this week. I learned that strategic planning could help nurses to determine their future actions and relate them to the establishment’s vision and mission. Moreover, I now understand that the quality of nursing improved significantly with technological advancements, and healthcare technology is paving the way for patients’ faster recovery and nurses’ effectiveness. Lastly, I am informed that shared governance allows nurses of all levels play a role in the decision-making process.
Concepts
The information from this week gave me an opportunity to understand more about healthcare technology. It is vital for nurses to learn how to budget for technology properly, as unsuccessful budgeting decisions may negatively impact nurses, patients, and the establishment as well. I implemented the knowledge of making the most sensible choices in relation to healthcare technology. Furthermore, I was able to strategically assess some new systems that could be beneficial for a medical organization to install. Here, the concept of budgeting was helpful as it allowed me to balance the quality of care and limited resources of a hospital.
I was also able to discover more about shared governance, communication, and decision-making. In this case, the idea that nurses are leaders in clinical patient care gave me an ability to define my practice and outline my duties as a nurse. I implemented this knowledge into my training to better understand my autonomy and accountability. On the other hand, I was able to utilize collaboration as a method of shared governance and learn about empowering other nurses in the hospital setting.
Learning
For me, the sphere of informatics and technology was the area of the most significant learning this week. I found that informatics and nurses’ ability to understand its basic concepts is essential for various areas of nursing. As data becomes more and more significant to any nurse, information gathering and interpretation also become more complex (Huber, 2017). Nursing informatics help practitioners get access to evidence-based practice (EBP) and knowledge. Furthermore, according to Jensen, Guedes, and Leite (2016), incorporating informatics competencies into nurses’ education improves the quality of care and contributes to EBP and research. All in all, healthcare technology has a plethora of benefits that should be used in a hospital setting to achieve a better quality of care, higher levels of patient satisfaction, and a more advanced nurses’ decision-making process.
