“What Does Right to Life Mean to Me?”

Anything concerning the ending of human life has been a subject of significant debate for a long period of time and is a topic that has the needed attention for only some people, others simply have no care or think none about it. Although the right to life goes unnoticed by some individuals, the right to life is a major right that everyone has! If it is illegal to violate rights and laws, then why are there such things as abortion, euthanasia, and capital punishment? One must wonder what the right to life actually means to society today. Is it a crucial part of our way of life like the Founding Fathers had once written in the Constitution? Do we violate this right or do we know anyone who violates it? Do we truly understand what the right to life means? These are serious questions we all have to think about it.

One of the major infractions of the right to life is abortion. Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. Let’s talk stats for a minute. 1.058 million kids die from abortion.(https://www.all.org/learn/abortion/abortion-statistics/) What if one of those kids was the person that was going to cure one of the 100,000 diseases are world is facing? (https://www.quora.com/How-many-diseases-are-known-on-this-world) At 24 days the baby’s heart is beating! If a person is declared dead when their heart stops beating and it is illegal if you kill someone then why is it okay for a mother to abort their child after 24 days?

My mom is a Special Needs teacher and if one of the students’ moms would have aborted them because of their disabilities I would have never learned some of the most valuable life lessons of character. Every single time I would see them they would always have a smile on their face. Their lives are so much harder than ours yet they always seem to be more cheerful than most people. I have been fortunate enough to spend time with these wonderfully made children of God by volunteering for Fall Fest, Winter Fest, Prom, and so much more. I am able to hang out with them and they don’t care if you are popular or not, whether you are pretty or not, but they just smile and talk to you! Most people care if you are popular or pretty, yet they do not and they have suffered more than most of us can imagine. They don’t have a normal life, but they make it work! My question is: Why would we kill these poor children who are more cheerful, happy, and caring than most people?

Abortion is immoral and should be illegal! Whether your baby has Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, other birth defects, or simply no reason at all, the mother is choosing to kill her child, a child of God. Each child whether born or unborn is a unique individual, a specific person who is unlike anyone else in the world! “We are pro-life because we believe in the sanctity of life-including the lives of unborn babies.”(Mrs. Coutinho’s Papers) This is why abortion is immorally wrong!

Euthanasia is another violation of the right to life! 1, 400 people die a year from euthanasia, or the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma. (https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/euthanasia-debate/101266139/euthanasia-whats-done-around-the-world) Basically, it is the assisted killing of a child or adult usually with the help of doctors or pills! Even though people might be suffering from disease they should not decide when they die, only God does! If you knew you were gonna die from a terrible disease would you want your family and friends to remember that you were a fighter and died with dignity or would you want them to remember you were a quitter and died against God’s will because you never know if God will perform a powerful miracle and cure you from your disease! No matter what happens, God has a plan for all of us.

Do we really think that we should take it upon ourselves to help kill someone or do we comfort them and protect their right to life in the next 6 months they have to live? Some will say that the patient should be able to die! So does that mean that anyone in pain should be able to die? I realize to get these pills you have to go through a test that says you are almost 100% going to die in the next 6 months, but what about the almost, .9999% that they could survive? They should live out their faith and trust in God because He could miraculously cure them! This is what the patient should be focusing on in the last months they have to live, not wondering when they are going to get the pills to kill themselves. I hope everyone agrees with this statement: “Euthanasia is a grave violation of the law of God since it is the deliberate and morally unacceptable killing of a human person,” stated by Pope John Paul II.

The next serious infringement of the right to life is capital punishment. Some have included hanging, electrocution, the gas chamber, firing squad, and lethal injection. 67 people die a year because of it.

The Supreme Court has never found any form of capital punishment to be unconstitutional, but some states declared some of them unconstutional. The Supreme Court has never declared any form of capital punishment to be unconstitutional, yet the Constitution states: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws,” as Amendment number 14.(https://constitutionus.com/) Think about this, the Constitution states that no state shall deprive any person of life, but isn’t that exactly what capital punishment is? Capital punishment is the legally authorized killing of someone as punishment for a crime. The legal killing of someone, yet still the Supreme Court thinks none of it. This is why capital punishment is wrong. The founding fathers never wanted this to happen yet still we have capital punishment that is supposedly morally right.

1,059,467 people die because of these three things! “Without the right to life, all other rights are meaningless.” (Mrs. Coutinho’s Papers) This is why the right to life is so crucial. It is the foundation of our world because, without the right to life, there would be no people that make up our world.
