Pretentious diction and dying metaphors

While writing an essay, one needs to be conscious about mainly four topics: they are dying metaphors, operators or verbal false limbs, pretentious diction, and meaningless words. If anyone wants to complete an essay without making any nonsense, they must be aware of these topics. Among these, pretentious diction and dying metaphors are discussed in this paper. Usually, the political leaders think that their essays look more impressive when they use the flowery language with metaphors in them, but it actually confuses the readers.

Pretentious diction

The lack of preciseness is a cause for the decline of English language. Example for the lack of preciseness is the usage of pretentious diction. Pretentious diction has no place in good writing unless for giving a humorous effect. In certain situations, any diction may be right. The usage of these words depends on the writer’s choice and the preference of audience.

Example: “The deserted house of worship now serves as a memorial to futile efforts.” (Find free term papers in alphabetic listing by subjects, 2005). In the above mentioned sentence, the writer used the word Futile in order to dress up and make the sentence look more impressive to the audience. But this usage has made the sentence look vague. Another example of the pretentious diction is the usage of large meaningless words in the write up, where small and shorter words will be more apt.

Dying metaphors

A metaphor is “a figure of speech, an implied analogy in which one thing is imaginatively compared to or identified with another, dissimilar thing.” (Metaphor: its power and uses: this is an excerpt from the paper, 2009). A good metaphor can always help the writer whereas the usage of a dying metaphor can always lose its brilliance. Example: “His voice thunders…” and “…taken the theater scene by storm” (Find free term papers in alphabetic listing by subjects, 2005).The above mentioned metaphors are most commonly used ones. The usage of such metaphors shows the lack of imaginative capacity of the writer, which is a very common problem in English. The usage of these types of dead metaphors and the pretentious diction can cause to the vagueness of the essay and finally to the total collapse of the English language.
