This painting to me says a lot about the middle-class people going back home after work, tired and weary. How most of them are unprepared for the unexpected rain with shared umbrellas or makeshift jackets to cover their head from the downpour. Taking the cover of their face as to not lose sight of what is ahead. I would view myself in this scene as I have faced this experience once and with no other choice but to accept the fate that I would get wet eventually, I do see myself walking through the rain but not running as so not to slip off.

Poetry Prose

They are clearly picking up the pace (Line 11)

The point is, nothing happens further,

The cloud changed neither shape nor colour.

The rain neither subsides nor surges

The boat moves without moving.

The people on the bridge run exactly where the ran before (Line 16-18)

Time’s been stopped here (line 21)

Strange planet and strange people on it (Line 1)

They make pictures such as this (Line 4)

One can see water,

One riverbank,

A narrow boat strenuously moving upstream,

A bridge over the water,

And people over the bridge

(Line 6-10)

Fr generations it has been considered in good taste to hold this painting in high esteem (Line 34)

It is common to be aware of our surroundings as it is safe for us and others but do, we ever really focus on what is going on? Our lives go about as it only revolves us most of the time even though there are others in it. Both people on the bridge and Musee des beaux-arts touch the subjects of people’s awareness and human’s passiveness to agony.

In people in the bridge poem, it is based on a painting that immortalizes the moment along with the people and setting is based on. The usage of lines such as nothing happens furthers shows the prosaic manner where we understand it is a painting and the most one could get out of that situation in real life is wet from the rain.

As for Musee des beaux-arts, there is a lot of suffering going on but more than that, there is also normality of life side by side. When a chaotic situation is happening, there is also someone else going on with their daily chore. When there is someone anticipating death by drowning in the sea, a luxury boat who could have witnessed the death goes about its trail as it is destined to. This shows how insensitive humans are to the pain and suffering of others.

The major difference in opinion I saw between these two poems is the manner of perception towards the painting. in people in the bridge, the painting was rather considered as a mere painting without having to hype it much and there is nothing to praise it highly for. It was considered more like a moment captured where the scene doesn’t progress forward, but it is on loop forever. However, in the latter, the painting is depicted to show more than what is there. Talking about people elsewhere living their lives and even comparing the animals unaware of reality. About how people move on with their lives while someone is nearing the end of theirs. None of it is anyone’s fault but rather the natural course of nature

We realize that though the perspective changes, both the interpretations are true of the poems. A moment captured is never alive beyond that scene and so does life revolve no matter what happens. We should be a little more aware of our surroundings and not ignorant. Learning to look at things from a new perspective and better ourselves. Learning to agree to disagree and a little more sensitive towards things.
