Last summer was the most memorable summer of all time. I always have some plans for every summer, that is, watching TV, going to camps, and trying a new diet every week. But last summer I decided to change my routine. I wanted to learn something new, so decided to apply for an internship. The idea of an internship was new to me because I rarely see people of my age willing to work especially during the summers. I started applying to a few companies through ‘Internshala’, which is a platform for internships. In all intern applications, there was a statement stating that one needs to be above 18 years to apply. I was quite disturbed but still wanted to apply, however, I have mentioned a note at the end of my resume stating that I am below 18 and have also written an essay with the reason why I wish to be selected. Only one company out of 25 that I have applied for, has invited me for an Interview and I have been there. They said that they were captivated by my essay but again for the same reason they hesitated to offer me an internship. This experience helped me to understand the current scenario of the unavailability of Internships for high school students. It is embedded in peoples’ minds that high school students are too young to take up an inter. I feel it is unfair to judge us on the account of our age and I sincerely believe that high school students much be given a chance to take up an internship. This helps to understand the practicality of any subject. I have motivated my friends to apply for internships along with me however even they had to face similar experiences.
Working as an intern at an early age is a new concept for Indian students and parents too. Encouragement from parents towards taking an internship in high school in India is too low. Initially, when I shared with my mom about my plan to take an internship on vacation, she politely asked me to just concentrate on my studies. I sincerely feel that lack of awareness in society on taking an Internship is the main cause of us getting rejected by companies. Awareness programs should be conducted by people from education sectors which would definitely motivate people and will open gates for High school students to grad an internship opportunity.
The increase in the usage of technology is helping people to gain theoretical knowledge and in turn, this is also leading to high expectations from an employer when a fresher attends a job interview. Therefore, I believe that an internship at the high school level will definitely help a fresher to grab some practical knowledge and also understand the professional world, which may help in grabbing a job in his first interview.
After trying hard for a month to get an internship on my own, I finally got one at my dad’s friend’s company just within two days. Initially, I felt lucky to get an internship but I wish I would have got it on my own. Using contacts is another way to get an intern but how many would have this chance? I feel It would have been a proud moment for me and my parents if I would have got it on my own. No doubt that this Internship has taught me a lot and I am sure that the skills that I have learned would definitely help in my future endures however I feel every high school student should be given an opportunity to grab an internship. In order to solve this problem, I sincerely feel that our high schools should be associated with companies to allow their willing students to get an internship. They may also introduce a selection process which will increase the competitive spirit among students.
I understand that schools and companies alone may not have the right to take a call on their own in providing internships to high school students, but I am sure with the help of our Government we will be able to generate many opportunities for the young generation.
Today’s youth is tomorrow’s future.
