The Green Knight is an aesthetically pleasing movie that managed to intrigue and mesmerizes the audience with its visual presentation. I have watched the film recently and came out of it thinking that the cinematic aspects of its presentation were the strongest, far outshining the story or the characters themselves. The film is shot in a very particular way, emphasizing the unreal qualities of its story and creating a sense of surrealism, which then permeates the entire piece. In many of its locations, the color choices are stark and high in contrast, giving quick, striking impressions. Dark lighting, put into competition with sharp greens and yellows, while also sometimes being mellowed out by a more realistic scenery, fosters a dream-like atmosphere that puts the actual events of the movie in the background. While the story of a heroic knight and his competition against a surreal opponent persists, it is decidedly not the main focal point of the piece and not what the creators were focusing on during the production of the film. I certainly think this movie might not interest everyone, but I also consider it to be very interesting on a technical and visual level. Compared to more straightforward narratives, it can provide a refreshing and novel look into how to tell an existing story.
